Senior / Principal Consultant – Clean Energy Infrastructure Locations: UK Flexible / New Delhi, India Overview Role: Senior / Principal Consultant – Clean Energy Infrastructure Ricardo plc is a global strategic, environmental, and engineering consulting company. The Energy Infrastructure Transition Practice carries out projects to help transition energy infrastructure towards a net-zero future. Infrastructure Implementation This role will contribute to our portfolio of projects that enable large energy users and energy hubs to transition energy infrastructure for the future, including power demand and generation and clean fuel transition. Sites may include maritime, rail and other bulk transport, industrial users, and communities. Network Innovation We work with power utilities and industry stakeholders to deliver network innovation by designing and implementing trials, conducting research and analysis (including power systems analysis and technoeconomic modelling), and delivering programme management and stakeholder engagement. This includes assessing decarbonisation constraints and opportunities for a client context, and considering grid-related impacts and pathways. Recent examples include exploring rail and power system intersections and expediting renewable and low-carbon fuels and technologies for maritime clients, including a digital tool development. Technical Services to Utilities and Industry The team supports utilities with technical services in generation connection compliance (Power Quality assessments) and reviews of technical standards for industry stakeholders. Role Expectations You will demonstrate technical leadership and interpersonal, customer-facing strengths within the delivery team, support business development activities (project ideation, bidding for public tenders, and client presentations), and work across a range of projects, clients, industries, and locations. You will help clients assess, design and implement technical solutions, strategies, and roadmaps to decarbonise energy infrastructure and power systems globally, with opportunities to support wider projects as the business unit develops. Key Responsibilities
Contribute to developing and delivering our growing portfolio of clean energy infrastructure projects. Deliver time-sensitive technical analysis for private organisations, industry associations, and public sector clients, ensuring client satisfaction, timely delivery, strong financial performance, and high-quality outputs. Project management and task lead for Clean Energy Infrastructure projects within a consultancy framework, including mobilisation, governance, reporting, client liaison, and quality assurance. Contribute to wider energy infrastructure transition projects with expert consultants. Lead the development of technical proposals within the energy sector with support across the team.
Client Relationships & Thought Leadership
Identify and pursue new business opportunities. Develop and maintain strong client relationships and networks through project delivery and sector networking; support key account management to grow relationships. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of sector technology developments, trends, challenges, and regulations. Provide thought leadership on energy infrastructure transition topics and participate in industry events where possible.
Additional / Special Features Of The Role
Some domestic and/or international travel may be required for project meetings and sector events.
Essential Skills And Qualifications
Degree level or higher in electrical engineering, renewable energy, energy transitions, sustainable infrastructure, or power systems. Demonstrated expertise in technical delivery in renewables and/or power sectors, with interest in energy infrastructure or project implementation. Experience in consultancy or relevant delivery of consultancy projects. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal skills to work with multidisciplinary teams across geographies. Confidence presenting to diverse audiences, including senior client representatives. Excellent time management to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines. Fluency in English and strong reporting writing skills.
Desirable
Experience managing complex consultancy or implementation projects. Experience building projects and securing new work via proactive engagement or tender bidding. Ability to leverage sector contacts to support new opportunities and build client/partner trust. Familiarity with technical analysis methods and tools including Cost Benefit Analysis, quantitative scenarios, and modelling. Experience with renewable energy systems and/or smart port technologies. Fluency in other languages (Spanish or other European languages) is a bonus.
